Our annual charity campaign, in partnership with payment merchant OneCard, raised over $300,000 by users playing our popular chat game; Fishing Bot! $310,785 to be exact…a whopping $74,000 more than last year’s campaign.
By ‘fishing for hunger’, Palringo users were raising money for Action Against Hunger and Islamic Relief Worldwide. There were four limited edition fish up for grabs along with a special one-off Achievement for whoever caught all four. 50% of money from the purchase of special in-game boosters went directly to our two charity partners.
Adding a charitable twist to the game proved a successful tactic with spending in the game increasing by 33% during the campaign, showing the positive effects of giving in a gamified context.
Over the past three years, our users have raised nearly $800,000 for a range of charities. This year we decided to focus on fighting world hunger, as it seemed relevant at a time when a lot of our users were fasting while participating in Ramadan.
Islamic Relief Worldwide are using the funds to help support its on going provision of food packages to those affected by the humanitarian crises in Lebanon, Syria and Yemen.
Action Against Hunger will be focusing on supporting children at risk of hunger in India, which has the largest number of children suffering from malnutrition in the world, with over 8 million children under 5 at risk from life-threatening hunger. Our money will help fund an ambitious programme designed to work with local partners and help India become a world leader in the fight against child hunger.
We want take this opportunity to say a huge ‘THANK YOU’ to everyone that played Fishing Bot during the campaign and for everyone who refilled and chummed our way to $310,785!! We’ve been blown away by the positive response and look forward to growing the concept even more next year.
We will keep you updated on the projects that we are supporting over the next few months.
